Hey Graham,

My advice would be go and see it as it’s local to you. If it all looks as good as it does in the photos, the guy seem genuine, your happy with weight, assembly, it all fits in your car etc etc....then go for it and get out on the water while there’s still some season left.

It’s all very well us lot saying it’s a bit overpriced, that’s just an opinion, and it does actually appear to be a well looked after set up. If you end up deciding it’s not suitable, you can always sell it on next season without taking much of a hit.

The motor if in really good condition should be worth around a £1000, and even an old but well cared for T35 would rarely drop much below £400. Add a bit on for a few accessories and you’re not far off getting your money back.

PS; Hopefully seller must have a bit of leeway in his price. Fifty quid off for a nice easy cash deal would surely be reasonable....just saying like. :whistle

@Steve @Martin @harrison

Thank you all for everything you have helped me with so far! I will be organising with the seller tomorrow night to go over and see the boat.

Last question guys I promise! Should I be looking at buying a compression tester or such like to test the outboard? I used to have one in my motorbike days but no longer do. All I am going to be able to do when I am there apart from visually look at it is to hear it running in one of those large flexible buckets. Or is it just pot luck? Aside from poor flow from the tell tale, poor compression and water in the gearbox (which at this point the latter two I am unlikely to check unless told otherwise) I have no idea what to look for. Bar looking under the hood as advised in a previous post. There is no documented service history as he has maintained for 10 years himself.

What would you guys check when buying a used outboard?

@Grahamdavies1989 Sorry for the late reply,
I would insist on starting the outboard from cold... Before he even thinks about firing it up, check the temp of the power head to ensure it's stone cold. (hand measurement)
Keep the kill cord disconnected and have a gentle pull on the starter to check for compression, youre never going to find out how balanced it is, but you should meet some resistance to give you a little indication.
Corrosion under the hood will be a sign of poor maintenance, are the plugs clean and new looking?
Have the anodes been replaced or are they in poor condition?
Look for leaks around gaskets or swollen seals.
Fuel filter.. should be clean if he's maintained the outboard.
check gear/throttle linkages/cables for wear,snags,play.

If you're in any doubt.. Walk away !!

As harisson says, you can always sell it back on but maybe taking a hit if it's not quite the combo you're looking for.
Bare in mind, a new T35 is only a little over £900 new.
