They are both fine outboards. I have the 2007 version of the Mercury / Mariner which is identical to the 2014, just older, so I can vouch for that.
I’ve been doing some (very) quick research and while some of the Yams can be converted to 15hp it seems like a bit of a ball-ache.
Both engines weight in at a smidge under 40kg so there is no real weight advantage to be had.
I would go with which ever one you think would look best on the back of your boat!
Not a complete idiot - some parts are missing.

As said the 9.9 to 15 conversion on 4 strokes is painful and not simple ( often the 15 is the same block as the 20 so it is an entire different engine -you can tell by comparing the tech specs - if the cc & bore/ stroke is different its a totally different engine) .

As for the Yam/ Merc .. I've had both .. The Yam just seems so much more refined than my merc was - smoother . quieter etc - but then its down to ages and condition . an as new 2014 will still only be 8 years old in 2022 ! My 2006 yam is already 'old' at 13 years :( .. but still runs & starts like is new !

You're adorable :rofl . This is a picture of the 69 Evinrude that is on my SIB and this thing starts with the first push of the button or first pull of the rope. The engine is actually a year older than I am!

I know what you mean ! When people say they don't trust a 5 year old outboard I have to smile...I always think of both my 2006 Yamahas as 'new' - but they both run , start & rev perfectly :) ( just doomed myself to break down next time out now ! )

To be fair I'm likely to give more trust to a 2-stroke since they are easy to maintain and fix. No computers, just moving parts.

Nice one . I don't think you will be disappointed with how smoothly it runs & how little fuel they burn . Not the lightest of engines , but Hopefully you will start to see why they command a premium over others :)

I assume given location you went to see it & started it etc ?
