Elling 350 and mounting 2.5HP OB

Post by Simon » 29 Jun 2022, 14:35

Hi
I have put this under a different subject, hope this is ok ?

I have a problem with mounting the suzi 2.5HP OB, onto the elling.
I think..... I need to move it up, but need to check with you intelligent people.

The throttle arm, bangs on the transom when moved to full turn.
The bottom of the engine touches the sausage, and from memory, the cavitation plate shouldn't be anywhere near where it is.
I have included some photos... Help ! lol

Hi Simon,

Me again with my two penneth, sorry in advance for all this preaching.

Difficult to tell from pics but could be slightly low and needs raising anyway if tiller clouts transom.

Aim to get AV plate about level with underside of central keel although might find a few mil lower works better on these tunnel hulls. Raise with a block of wood on top of transom under saddle….can usually get at least 20mm before clamps start to miss transom pad.

I also reckon your motor could do with trimming out at least one pin. Theory is to get AV plate parallel to water surface (leg vertical) when planing.

Not got a pic of our 3.5 on the Elling but found this of the Orca 8 showing AV plate about level with u/s keel tube. Think we had an 8mm thick hdpe spacer (IKEA chopping board) which worked well for us.

I had trouble with my 8hp Suzuki touching the sausage and had to use a 20mm chopping board to space the outboard leg further back to clear the sausage.
When I went to fit a replacement 15hp Yamaha outboard the extra 20mm chopping board spacer was so much extra thickness to the transom that the saddle didn't fit and I had to remove the spacer all together but the Yamaha didn't have the same problem as the Suzuki and clears the sausage. It would be very close if the pin was in hole 1 though.

So....
Spent a bit of time, mucking about, and this setup I have now seems better.

I can only avoid the sausage under the boat, by moving the OB shaft up to the second position on the bolt hole.
Looking at it now, it does seem a little, not straight, but the transom is a little, not straight, but I assume, this will only help me once on the plane. At least it isn't the other way, and forcing my nose down, and the boat will have most of the weight upfront ! (See pics)

I have placed a bit of wood about 10mm under the OB and above the transom, and this seems to help with the steering arm and the position with the sausage.

There aint much else I can do really, so I think it's a case of try it and see. If it's really bad, then I'll have to do what Oldman said, and thicken out the transom with some 9mm ply.
