Will my vhf work

Post by Andiac » 16 Sep 2016, 10:06

Just a quick question
After crazy auction prices on eBay I decided to buy a new SH 870e handheld. On advice read hear
I'm going to be down in Southampton next sat, doing course and taking the vhf exam at end of the day.
If weather is nice on the Sunday, going to venture out into Solent, question is, will the radio work even though it's not registered yet?
I guess the D S C part wil not, as I won't have a code to input, but will radio work as basic vhf, sorry if it's a dumb question but as I'm not near any boating areas at home, radio is not picking up any traffic.
I know I will find this out on the course, but just planning ahead,
Thanks Andy

Why not licence the vfh with OFCOM now, before your SRC course. Then you can enter the allocated MMSI number all ready for Sunday.

You only get one chance to enter the MMSI, it cannot be changed later, so double and triple check its correct when entering it

No silly questions on here buddy, just advice wanted & given.
As Chris quotes, you can register and get your Mmsi number on the ofcom site. Make sure you select the portable & DSC option.
Again, as Chris says, adding your Mmsi into the radio is a one chance input , get it wrong and you'll have to return your VHF back to Standard Horizon for resetting .

Because it's a big old WWworld out there

Ok thanks, I did register online at ofcom for a ship portable licence but came across a form where I had to enter the mms I number, which I need but don't have issued yet? Is this because I haven't a licence yet as not passed exam,
Been searching on phone at work while rained off, so maybe it will be clearer when I get onto it at home
Cheers

When you apply for the ships portable licence you get the option to specify if it's DSC or not. I guess you may have missed that option. If you phone OFCOM up they will no doubt be able to sort it all out for you and allocate you a MMSI.

As Martin says there are no silly questions, we all started out our boating careers knowing absolutely nothing.
