Engine Timer

Post by blootac » 20 Apr 2015, 08:29

I thought it'd be both interesting and useful to fit an engine timer to my new outboard so I'd have an idea of how long it's run over it's life as well as for servicing.

I bought one of these engine timers from ebay, £5 from china, took a week to turn up.

It's got to be one of the easiest mods that you can possible do and takes < 3 minutes and 4 baby cable ties.

Here is the packaging

Back of the unit, it's completely sealed.

To mount, you take the cable, wrap it times around a HT lead and cable tie on. you then pass the free end through the groove on the back of the timer. Basically you're creating a little inductive transformer. The coil of wire gets energised when there is a spark and the timer uses, I'm guessing, the hall effect to sense this. When it senses a current then the clock starts timing. Simple!
Make sure you cable tie everything out of the way of anything hot or moving.

Here it is working, showing 1.2 hours.

Engine timer and rpm counter ordered so we'll see how I get on.
Thank's Blootac for the heads up ;-)
I need to keep track of the hours use this year as I'm going to use the boat as much as I can.
I'm also going to see if experimenting with trim and maybe fins I already have laying around fitted to my OB make handling and performance differences on this new F-RIB :Confused

When you say it only lasted 8 hours, what happened to it? Water damage?

Yes they mist up and you can't read them, if the hour meter was kept under the cowel you might be in with a chance,
