Hi, is automotive gear oil ok to use in outboard, or is there a specific marine gear oil that’s required?
Thanks

Re: Gear oil
No, Don't use a generic gear oil in your outboard without checking the specific grade advised by the manufacturer.

Re: Gear oil
The manufacturer says SAE 80-90 but doesn’t state a make? Which made me think any SAE 80-90 from a car accessory shop, say comma or Castrol etc?

Re: Gear oil
Marine grade should be used, it is different to general auto oils. I did read about the reasons some years ago on google but have long since lost those brain cells to old age. a quick search says "Marine Gear Oil contains seal conditioners and an exclusive blend of additives that protect from rust and wear caused by both fresh water and salt water during long periods of storage. Also prevents foaming at high revolutions"

Re: Gear oil
I use Mercury/Mariner/Quicksilver Outboard Premium Gear Oil Lube, also Quicksilver Engine oil not much dearer than other oils and the proper stuff.
