Hm, so I might have done something foolish. I bought a Yamaha Enduro 8 hp (E8DMH). It is a short shaft outboard but the shaft is longer than the transom on my boat so the cavitation plate sits 5-6 cm below the bottom of the boat...

I'm glueing some stuff on my boat so I haven't had a chance to test if it is a problem but should I already plan to add a jack plate to lift it up?



Also can anyone tell me the age of the outboard? The production year is "D" but that can apparently mean 1995, 2005 or 2011 depending on what website I'm looking at.

It's a common problem unfortunately. Most transoms are around 15" deep whilst most short shaft motors have 16" to 17" leg lengths.

Simplest solution is to just add a timber spacer under the saddle on top of the transom. Usually limited to around 20 to 30mm rise...lift as high as possible whilst clamps still engage on inner transom pad.

If you can get AV plate within 25 to 30mm of keel, then all should be well. Might even be ok as is, but too deep just results in excessive splashing and more drag.

I think I can lift it a couple of centimeters with a piece of timber. If I have trouble getting on the plane or with splashing I will try to raise the transom. I don't want the extension to be too bulky making the boat hard to pack so I have been looking at doing something like shown below.
