1979 Selva 20hp - First Run Ever
Hi folks!
A while ago my Dad bought a Selva 350 (20hp) two stroke from PreLoved. It was in bits and has never been run. That's right - never. As far as we can tell the engine was stored somewhere where the was a source of light on one side, which we know from the yellowing of the paint on the cowling, but other than that we know nothing about it. The engine is in pristine condition other than a bit of hanger rash.
After a complete rebuild we finally managed to get it out of the workshop, onto the test stand and run it.
It's a long shaft so it can't go on my Honwave, but it's going on the 17ft dory instead.

Not a complete idiot - some parts are missing.

That it did. Most like a motorbike, or at least a really big strimmer!

For the full motorbike immersion lose the bin. Go with flush muffs to get the race day auditory experience and while you're at it pick up some Castrol TTS (probably Castorl Power 1 Racing 2T is the closest you can get these days) for the olfactory glory!!!! Smells like winning!
You neighbours will be round in no time to congratulate you on taking them back to the Barry Sheen days.

Can you run marine 2 strokes on non marine 2 stroke oil? I know you cannot use strimmer 2 stroke oil without destroying an outboard.

Re: 1979 Selva 20hp - First Run Ever
Probably wouldn't recommend it, but doubt it would do massive harm.
If there was a proper technical reason not to use motorcycle 2T it would probably be running temperatures. Abundant ice cold cooling water probably enables outboards to run cooler than a bike recycling red hot coolant via a radiator so the oils may have different viscosity.
TTS does smell great though

Re: 1979 Selva 20hp - First Run Ever
marine 2-stroke is designed for marine outboards.. I believe it's a little easier to break down (biodegradeable) and it's designed to work at lower temperatures than a motorcycle oil.
