Do fuel preservers work?

Post by CRF999 » 08 Sep 2022, 16:59

Well i had my doubts but today i think i became a convert.
Fuel, with correct ratio of Honda additive, was last used September last year.
I have not been able to use it since but a sea outing is imminent so i drained the tank to see how much i had left.
Inspection showed a few specs of crud remained in the bottom but no worse than any other tank i have had, they all get some bits in. Mopped the tank out and filtered the fuel back in.
The filter was VERY clean and no jelly monsters. SO i will be religiously using the Honda juice from now on.

Hooked up the tank to the engine ( BF6A) pump the bulb until firm, start revs setting, full choke .
It started 3rd pull and the choke had to go in straight away.
That impressed me. ran till warm, removed fuel line and ran out carb again.
Lubricated where necessary and it is now ready to go.

I can't speak to fuel preservers but I can to Seafoam Treatment.

Our 4s outboard was starting to have surge issues during 1st use after sitting for a month or two. Didn't go away until engine ran a good bit of gas through.

I used some Seafoam on the last outing and right away could tell when it did it's job as the engine immediately started running like when we got it.

I did add some fuel additive for long storage but not sure if it's needed with this other stuff.

Wrote a note said, 'back in a minute'. Bought a boat and I sailed off in it.

Yeah it seams the stuff you used is a cleaner and stabiliser combined so no need to add a separate dose of stabiliser, although I am sure it would not hurt.

Mine was not suffering from poor running I just knew the fuel would be hanging around a while and had experienced jelly problems with the engine in Norway which at that time did not have stabiliser.

Nice to know the seafoam works , I will keep that in mind.
