Whether to fog for winter or not.

Post by Robert Donithan1 » 12 Sep 2021, 01:39

I bought a new 6hp 2 stroke outboard for my 10.5 sib.
Unfortunately here in certain parts of Maryland (namely my fishing areas) we had weeks of heat waves throughout the summer. That led up to me @72 years and not real good health to get left out of fishing or boating for the whole season..not excluding covid-19. I didn't get it but it's out there waiting. Well my question is now that the fall and winter is coming on should I fog the motor? It has never been run or had gas in it. And I'm going to keep it in the trunk of a car all off season.

Fogging is a protective coating of the cylinder with oil. Normally by spraying a suitable product into the carb whilst running until the engine stalls out.

It can also be done manually which is what i suggest to Robert as his engine has never even seen fuel.

Hi Robert hope this answer helps you. I live in the UK Lake District which is normally cool and damp, frequently in summer particularly on Bank Holidays.
I will not be fogging or oiling my engine for the winter , despite those conditions, but it will be stored inside an unheated building.

I have no idea what the weather will be like in Maryland or inside your "trunk" but if you want to be sure I would manually oil it. It is certainly NOT worth fueling it up just to FOG it. You will probably wash away more protective lubricants than you add.
So plug out, tilt engine up , add a couple of teaspoons of oil to the cylinder, pull it over slowly manually to spread the oil, plug back in, pull up to compression ( you don't want any nasty Suzuki stuck valves next year) , store in trunk.

Good luck with the engine and the fishing next year.

Regards Clive

Guys,
I would recommend checking the operating manual for storage recommendations. For my 20 HP 4 stroke EFI Mercury the manufacturer specifically recommends against fogging an EFI engine. Instead they recommend adding a portion of 2 stroke engine oil and stabilizer to the last fuel run through the engine.
