Hi , about to purchase a new engine , I have been advised to go for the new yam 25hp , but it's 700 more then tohatsu, it's lighter but what else does it offer . 2 cylinder instead of 3 , surely the 3 would be a smoother engine
Also with the 3 cylinder , if one goes down will.have better chance of getting home.
That 700 pound difference is almost the price of an aux. 2 new engines for the price of one ...almost.
Cheers
2 cylinder or 3

While in practical terms the difference will be negligible - I suspect you would find the Yam is a better engineered engine- which will pay you back in resale value & overall feeling ….of niceness to use.
The chance of a new Yamaha letting you down is so small I wouldn't even consider it TBH. If I had them money I'd choose Yam every time

Re: 2 cylinder or 3
Yamaha’s are mighty fine motors and quality/engineering wise do feel a cut above the rest. Are they any more reliable than the other big five...in reality, probably not. Do they hold value better than the big five...yes but only marginally.
The new Yam 25 is a great lightweight motor and the obvious choice if transporting and lifting on/off transom. If your motor stays bolted on the boat then weight is not such an issue and the heavier 3cyl larger cc motors from Tohatsu/Merc/Mariner and slightly less cc (still 3cyl) Suzuki are in my opinion a better bet. More cubes are going to equate to more torque, more grunt, no question. The three cylinder motors should also be smoother at low revs than a two pot.
All Yams are really nice though.

Re: 2 cylinder or 3
Been using a tohatsu on my rib at moment, no complaints. I wouldn't rate it the same as my honda I had previously but does the job.
It's going on an Orkney longliner 2, so weight not a big concern. Tohatsu it is.
