Very interesting Douglas thanks,
I was thinking of it too simplistically I.e 25% me power so 25% faster etc
I don't think I'll persue it anyway. My 15hp planes my f rib and my heavier honwave so I don't really need the extra power
Plus I've just bought a canoe so hopefully I'll stop being so lazy and use the outboards a bit less anyway !
Roll on the summer!

Re: Upgrading Suzuki 15hp to 20hp
curiosity got the better of me so had a look myself and it would seem you are right mate, the 9.9 and 15 have the same ignition timing settingsPaul B wrote:Spoke with my dad, and it was just a carb swap, no need to alter the timingAndy B wrote:Paul,
Did you have to make any adjustments to the ignition timing when you did your upgrade?
only real difference I've noticed between the 2 are the rev range is higher on the 15, and a slightly taller cam on the 15hp

Re: Upgrading Suzuki 15hp to 20hp
Too late to revive this old thread?
Hey Paul,
I'm seriously looking at a bigger engine. I like the idea of a 10HP running at 15HP (weight being the key thing, as like you, my back is not in tip top condition) and a little looking around the ole web says the 15hp moved to a EFI setup back in 2011, so I'm guessing doing the upgrade now is no longer an option for me, unless* I can pick up a second hand unit a feel confident I'm not about to get stitched up in the process
So... My question of you, is do you know the CC of your engine? AKA am I looking for a 327cc or a 208cc? I assume the later. I just need to fine a <2010 model and a 15HP carb to go on the same.
*OR!! Does the upgrade exist, by simply putting an old (larger) carb on the new engine, assuming this all get a lot more complicated if the EFI system was retained.

Re: Upgrading Suzuki 15hp to 20hp
Marco, The new Suzuki 9.9, 15hp & the 20hp are all the same weight.
Pauls carb df9.9 is one of the lower cc models, His dad owned it previously and had the bigger bore 15hp carb fitted and he added a stainless prop, a good upgrade but not quite the full 15hp.
The newer efi models of 9.9,15 & 20hp are all the same weight at 44kg. One of the lightest in their class and an all round belting outboard.

Re: Upgrading Suzuki 15hp to 20hp
Thanks!
Maybe I'm being a weakling here, but 44kg seems an awful lot like 45kg time the prop and oil are added to the equation, and ultimately a tad too heavy for my dickie back? I'll look into the sack barrow option, but, I'd be a lot more interested in getting something sub forty kaye ghees to be fair, as I'll be moving everything on my jack jones and thus this old thread appealed. As does the stainless prop option. My question would be, does the stainless prop actually make any meaningful difference on an engine in the sub 20hp category? I'd be interested to know if anyone has done (or read) anything meaningful about this.

Re: Upgrading Suzuki 15hp to 20hp
If you want something meaningfully under 40kg then you are looking at an old 2 stroke. Some of the Johnson / Evinrude 15s can be carried in one hand without any problem.
However, they are very loud and use a lot of fuel.

Not a complete idiot - some parts are missing.
