I think that I would probably hold out for something a little bigger.

As for the corrosion, I'm unsure as to the mechanics of how these OB pump water. Think I need to consult I diagram...

I'd be cautious unless you have spare time and money to throw at an outboard. For someone says it's running but not pumping water, how long have they run it without it pumping water? Think of the possible damage.
On the other hand, if your mechanical knowledge and hands on experience are good enough to tackle such a job, you may well pick up a bargain.

My real gem is the 9hp 1978 two stroke, although it goes like the clappers, it sounds like a spitfire and drinks fuel like an F1 car
2strokes don't idle too well, the gain in weight loss is challenged by fuel economy imo, you'll be carrying extra fuel every trip compared to the four stroke reliability and economy. As Andy says, two strokes fetch silly money. I wouldn't sell mine if someone offered me £1000

Ideally, and again in my opinion.. I'd be looking for the super reliable, superb economy and lightest 9.9 four stroke out there, which is.... A Suzuki
Expect to pay around £1k though for such.
Bargain basement stuff, you need history, see it starting from cold, see it running. Check the prop for damage £70-£100 for replacement. And as you've said, watch the tell tail.

Based on my experience , don't go any higher than a 10hp , I've got a Honwave 3.2ie matched to a Suzuki 9.9 uprated to 15hp with a st/steel prop, and whilst it goes like hell, it's probably over engined for the boat, I cannot remember the exact speed it's been clocked at by Martin, but it was in the high twenties, and if not really careful can get you into big trouble very quickly, whilst Martins old 3.8 was like your favourite old Labrador nice and sedate, mine was like a jack Russell on steroids,


Maybe a 8hp would be a better match for your 2.7, but a 10 will certainly make it entertaining

The biggest problem with old outboards comes when you try and strip them down and all the threads strip and you're left with a pile of white dust!
Personally i wouldn't go anywhere near that mec blueband.
Niel on here has a yammy in bits he wants shot of if you want a project.

Quick question that could save you time and money in the long run..
Do you think you'll buy a bigger SIB or FRIB in the near future ?

I think the way it's going it's inevitable that I will be upgrading in the future, but probably not the near future (apart from the engine).

The size of the 2.7m is pretty ideal especially how it fits in the boot of my hatch back , at least for the next 12months or so. I'll probably have some fun with what I've got and then look to upgrade when i've a little more experience. If I can sell the engines I've acquired already and end up with something a more appropriate nearer 10HP I'll be a happy man.

I appreciate these things tend to keep their value pretty well so I could always spend a little more if required.
