Honwave T38 - 6HP option?

Post by Steve » 26 Aug 2019, 13:45

Hi folks

Just mulling over buying a smaller OB for the T38. Currently run the DF20AS and although it's only 44Kg, I'm finding the weight of the boat and OB a bit much to handle on my own. Conseqeuently, I've not used the T38 much for the last year or so...

We got the idea of purchasing a much lighter OB, say the DF6AS weighing 24Kg, so that I can pop out on my own for a spot of fishing. Whilst keeping the 20hp for longer trips out or when I've got the misses to help to lug the rig up the beach or slip.

I just wondered if anyone had used a 6hp on a T38 (or similiar) and if you found the experience painfully slow, or an acceptable trade off between performance and practicality that allowed you to go SIBing...

Any help or advice much appreciated!

:cheers

Steve

In the T38 I think you will be stuck to displacement speeds with a 6hp unless you are very light, as the T38 is fairly draggy compared with boats like the Frib.
Not a complete idiot - some parts are missing.

i don't know if this is any help but i run a T40ae with a tohatsu mfs6s 6hp 4 stroke.
I can get 10 knots out of it on flat water and about 200kgs (me and some gear) on board.
Add a second person and speed drops to 6 knots and it barely planes.

Cheers mate, I'd settle for that with the T38... :thumbsup

That’s impressive performance for a sizeable air floor boat with a 6 on the back... for comparison my Frib 275 + Yam F6 will plane all day long with just me in, stick another adult in and no chance.

Someone has very kindly just done a video of exactly what I was thinking of:

Certainly not fast, but reckon it'll do what I want it to do (and I reckon if they shifted their weight around, they might even get on the plane)... :thumbsup

I have got a T32 and 6hp. It planes easily at about 14 knots with just me but will not plane if there is me and another adult

I think @The Gurnard posted a video of a T38 running his 6hp Yamaha a while back. It was one of the reasons I wanted to get a 6hp for going on the river. Unfortunately Mrs Froglet thinks floor coverings and paint for the house have a higher priority... ...she's probably right ;-)

Yeah here it is:
