Needs to be pretty tight, otherwise it might swivel up on a tight turn. You'd have to go some to crack the transom.
Also once tightened it's worth putting a clip or carabiner through both of the two holes at the end of the handles so as to stop them rotating and coming undone.
And lastly a tether from the outboard (most have an eye for this) clipped to a transom eye bolt, short enough to stop the outboard lifting off and disappearing into the drink if it does come loose.

Tighten it up as tight as it will go by hand, with the handles lining up facing each other. Then put an outboard lock or padlock over / through the handles.

You don't want it twisting itself off the transom during a tight turn under power, so it's got to be pretty tightly clamped on.

I was told to put stainless bolts through the engine transom backet, through the transom and cap it off with two wing nuts.

This i was told, would stop it twisting off in a tight turn.

I havnt done it yet... whats the teams thoughts

Personally I don’t bother, but I do the clamps up good and tight. The main reason I don’t bother is because I remove the outboard to pack the boat away. If I was mounting the engine semi-permanently I would drill and bolt the engine on.

This is how I would do it to make sure that no water can enter the transom:

Mark and drill the holes siginificantly oversized.
Fill the hole with epoxy and microbaloons so that the transom is sealed again.
Once hardened, drill out the epoxy to take the bolts, so I have an open hole through the expoy and not through the wood of the transom.
