Re: Wivenhoe and the River Colne
First joined this forum back in 2019 when I was living in Weymouth. Now i am living in Wivenhoe. Tidal range is about 5m and the water really boils through the flood gates on a spring. Sadly nowhere to launch in the village. There is a council jetty but it’s limited to unpowered craft only. The sail...

Re: Çhest waders fo launching ???
The question of waders crops up quite frequently on the kayak forums, with stories of people being dragged down to their deaths. Re: Chain Ferry
Before I came down to Poole at the weekend I spent a couple of evenings with "visitmyharbour" and my Garmin Chartplotter. The former for a minimal membership fee allows you to look at Admiralty Charts, Tidal Stream etc and the latter has all the same but interactive. Hey Paul, Have you tried the Na...

Re: Chain Ferry
To answer the other part of your question, you can calculate the effect of wind and tide on your journey easily. RYA Day Skipper course, which Sarah's company runs, or buy the book. Basic maths really and far easier than in a yacht (where you have to account for leeway). Wind and tide? I'm not aware...

Re: Chain Ferry
This is all good stuff, too much to take in, in one day, so ill have to go over it all again but with the chart out lol. I suppose your right, if you have engine fail, at least you can try to make a decision on it all. If your engine fails while going out, on a tide thats going out, surely this als...

Re: Chain Ferry
"I am trying to find some sort of general travel and safety logic I can apply at any harbour." Hopefully this is helpful, apologies if I've misunderstood and am teaching Grandma to suck eggs.... 1. Easy Guideline - "Rule of Twelfths" (doesn't work for Poole, or other harbours with a double tide, so ...
