Into the Wilderness

08 Jul 2017, 10:48

For anyone wondering what on earth happened to The Gurnard .. This adventure should explain all. :)

Fed up with a National Health Service that can't meet a health requirement .. Fed up of poor early summer weather .. Fed up of computers and social media ..
I finally took the leap to free myself from it all ..and head back to a life that frees and soothes my soul.

I left my house and possessions behind ..with the exception of the car.. tent ..small boat .. camera equipment..and a few other small odds and ends.. and headed for the great Wilderness of the North of Scotland.

I don’t have much money to my name ..but for a few days .. I felt I was the proud land owner of this deserted beach .. camping high on the cliffs overlooking the bay. I never saw another person walk those dunes my entire stay.

I then became self appointed guardian to a lonely boathouse and small jetty ..far from anywhere ..and again .. never saw a single soul .. never mind a real owner

I found many other beautiful spots to stay and was at one with myself .. living my dream... as this short GoPro Video hopefully illustrates.

There is a fair bit to take in while watching the video as there is a written commentary and also a sound track that all tie in with the pictures. To assist..here are the lyrics from the Eddie Vedder song

Setting Forth

Be it no concern, point of no return
Go forward in reverse
This I will recall
Everytime I fall

I'm free
Setting forth in the universe
Oh I'm free
Setting forth in the universe

Out here realigned
A planet out of sight
Nature drunk and high
Oh I'm free
I'm free...

Im home for a couple of days to attend hospital appointments .. recover.. recharge batteries .. then head back “Into the Wilderness” again.

I will be producing other videos of my adventures .. so will try to update this thread as I go.

Because I realise this is a boating forum ..Im not sure as yet .. whether to post only sea adventure parts .. or include the whole “nitty gritty life” of living in the wilderness . Forum feedback will assist my decision on how to continue in that respect.

I hope you found the Preview of some interest ..and are enjoying your own adventures this summer :thumbsup

Best Regards
The Gurnard.

I am just about the watch the video. I say post it all up, not just the sea parts :D

It sure sounds like you had fun.

If I was ever homeless, I think I'd head up that way and live in some of those boatsheds and catch my food with a rod

Welcome back, Sir Gurnard :wavey

Beautiful video taster, I look forward to more and as far as I'm concerned, you're welcome to post your stuff on here whether it's on the water, in moorland or up a mountain. As I've said many times before about your reports, as a fat lazy slob myself, it all gives me a huge amount of vicarious pleasure. :P

I especially love your Robinson Crusoe type locations. :thumbsup

The only thing is that I do worry about you climbing stuff like that on your own. Don't get me wrong, I know you're not an idiot and you have vast experience under your belt, including a tumble or two. But I do sometimes feel my heart in my mouth when I view some of your adventures, although I know since I'm watching it that you must have lived to tell the tale.

Keep sharing, friend, but keep safe too. ;-)

I don't think for one minute people will have any thoughts other than viewing the whole epic adventure Donny, We've seen you walking, climbing, fishing and the superb Glasgow visits previously and they made damn great reading/watching.

Keep em coming Donny, love to see the whole adventure.
Danny and myself had our own mini adventure on Wed. A record 51.7 miles covered - Broughty to Perth and back, but nothing compared to your lifestyle!

Thanks for the feedback guys..its appreciated. :thumbsup

I guess I was just trying to convince myself that its ok to put my personal thoughts and circumstances into this adventure as I am posting it on a public forum.

Roger.. I have a little secret to tell you. :o

I feel more vulnerable in some of the situations I put myself into on my boat .. than I do clambering cliffs.
On land .. I know I am in control of my holds on solid rock.
At sea..on a remote wind swept coast ..I am at the mercy of mother nature.

However .. I confess I had a wee accident a few days ago. I slipped and damaged one of my cameras and an elbow bone too. My elbow has recovered now .. and Im hopefully sorting the camera as we speak. The case is a bit mangled ..but it is working now. I didn’t slip on a mountain.. but on a wet grass slope onto a shore to take this photo.

Its not the best of photos..so you may ask if it was worth the effort ?

The answer is .. yes. My cameras are like my boat and car. They are not for show .. they are for use .. and that is what I do .. I use them to the full.

I will also tell you what I tell my daughters. If anything happens to me in the “wilderness” .. dont feel sorry. But do feel sorry for me if I die in a hospital bed .. with gangrene guts.

James ..Martin ..Paul B..and Paul ..Im happy to be back..but Im only around a few days until I get clear of hospital checks. However they are starting to treat my condition shortly .. which means I have to return every ten days for more treatment ..for the rest of the year... at least .. so I will be back and forth to update this post with videos of my Wilderness adventures.

Its an ongoing project that will keep me focused.

The sound track is Eddie Vedder’s Society.. and again from the movie “Into The Wild”

The lyrics fit this movie ..so here there are

It's a mystery to me
We have a greed
With which we have agreed

You think you have to want
More than you need
Until you have it all you won't be free

Society, you're a crazy breed
I hope you're not lonely without me

When you want more than you have
You think you need
And when you think more than you want
Your thoughts begin to bleed

I think I need to find a bigger place
'Cause when you have more than you think
You need more space

Society, you're a crazy breed
I hope you're not lonely without me
Society, crazy and deep
I hope you're not lonely without me

There's those thinking more or less less is more
But if less is more how you're keeping score?
Means for every point you make
Your level drops
Kinda like it's starting from the top
You can't do that

Society, you're a crazy breed
I hope you're not lonely without me
Society, crazy and deep
I hope you're not lonely without me
Society, have mercy on me
I hope you're not angry if I disagree
Society, crazy and deep

I hope you're not lonely without me

So without any more hesitation..here is the introduction video

Best Regards
The Gurnard

Great stuff Donald, I am just sorry that I am too done to venture up the west coast on camping trips at the moment. Great to see you covered so much of the NW on one trip.

Douglas :)
