In addition to an IOW crossing (given I can’t make the trip in January), I’ve had my eye on checking out the old Red Sands WW2 forts/60s pirate radio station at some point:

Looks interesting. Do you have the lat / long coordinates of the forts location? Where is a suitable launch site?

How about Keyhaven?
I've looked into this myself.
It's a lovely place and sheltered. It also offers the shortest crossing point of the Solent.
There's plenty to see along the way and opportunities to go ashore.

My plan was to make my way around to Freshwater Bay for lunch and then return.

There is plenty of parking some free if you're lucky :D

A gentle trip out of the harbor to make sure you kit is in order,

Then a short crossing from Hurst Castle to Fort Albert.

A coastal trip up to Alum Bay and the Neddles.

Then round the corner to Freshwater bay for lunch. there used to be a nice cafe in freshwater Bay :D

I'm very much still learning the ropes with boating and haven't advanced to latitude and longitude yet. My current method of navigation is to select a point on my iPhone Navionics app and try to keep the boat pointed in the general direction of the line it charts .

I actually can't find the forts on the Navionics map, which is weird as it shows all sorts of other detail (e.g. sunken Spitfire wrecks!). The Red Sands area is about 3 miles offshore.

I launched from a nicely sheltered free slip just off Faversham with Alan from SE F-Ribs when I took my boat out for a test ride during the summer. I don't know the area other than that and actually can't remember which slip it was, but I've ringed the options on a boatlaunch.co.uk screengrab, which [unlike Navionics] shows the forts.

+1 :thumbsup
Yeah it'll be good to visit further afield waters with a bit of help with local knowledge :thumbsup
I'd still like to visit the Thames estuary forts or the Welsh coastal areas and over to the east coast like Essex, Suffolk etc
:cheers

I'm keen on those too. Also keen on Wales too. The Mumbles is supposed to be good? :hugs :cheers

I'm liking the idea of Keyhaven, I've never explored that area at all.

If we pick the correct sea state Freshwater should be easily doable in Sibs.

I think we should start a separate thread for this in the trips section.

This looks like a fun trip, I think we should explore this in more detail. Anyone else on here know that area well?

Martin and Paul

Would it be possible to copy the Keyhaven and forts posts from here into two new threads in the events section? These sound like two great trips for 2018
