Hi
Well I have made the decision on which boat, it will be the Honwave T38 with a 20hp. The decision now is which outboard. The suzuki weighs in at 38kg with the Honda at 44kg. The 6kg less weight for me to man handle is quite a big thing for me but not knowing much about outboards I was after some advice on how reliable each engine is and does one out perform the other in any way. Also will it be a short shaft or long shaft I will need. The prices of each engine are comparable with the Suzuki coming in at around £100 cheaper. I did think about having electric start but I read somewhere on here it can add quite a bit of weight, is that correct.
Any advice would be much appreciated.

I’d recheck those figures to be honest paul,
I get the Honda to be 48kg and the suzuki to be 44kg.

Just checked on the suzuki website and you are correct, they quote 44kg, better get the weights out if I can lift them :lol:

are those figures wet weights? or dry?

add oil and fuel in the system and weight can rise dramatically.

it's mike motorbikes... all the manufactures quote dry weights and BHP at the crank. add oil, fuel you can add 20kg and loose 20% of the bhp to the back wheel.

id say go and try picking up the engines and moving them about in a store... cos 2 or 3 kg one you get in the 40+ kg range and you wont really notice. its more about how comfortable the lifting handles are.
If it has t*ts, tyres or floats......it's gonna cost ya!

You want a short shaft engine for a T38

I think they all quite dry weight Si, there’s very little oil in the outboards though and even with the filters full you’d struggle to add 2kg.
It’s funny how we all think differently, I’d have said the opposite to you on the weights of 40 kg + as every ounce after starts making it more difficult lol.
Most folk can deal with upto 40 kg, it’s after that it all starts getting heavy on your own.

I’m ok with my suzuki, but Paul’s twatso 20hp @ 52kg is bloody heavy :thud

Quite a few on here have the Suzuki engines and seem very pleased with them. I have personally used Honda, Yamaha, Suzuki, and Tohatsu and been very happy with them all. I did use a Mercury for a while but that seemed very temperamental (not a sib engine though, it was one of their bigger ones)

lol,,,, even now i'd still hunt down a good nick stroker. i'm really not a fan of the 4 stroke world. :lol: :lol: :lol:

lower weight, better power delivery, sound nicer (to my ears) can store any which way plus the smell of 2 stroke....hmmmmmm!!!

I do get ya Si, my little 9hp (the messerschmitt) is awesome and I’ll never sell it, but that suzuki 20efi really is the dogs.

I narrowed our choice down to the Honda and Suzuki 20’s because they were much lighter than the others.

In the end, we went for the Suzuki as, with its fuel injection, it’s a more advanced / modern engine. No regrets so far - it’s quiet, easy to start and is very fuel efficient. However, our local Suzuki dealer is rubbish, and that’s my only real complaint.

One more to add to your mix is the new Tohatsu 20. That’s got EFI and weighs 43kg. If I was buying again I’d certainly be researching that motor too!

43 / 44 kg is quite a bit of weight to lift on your own. I can just about get it in and out of the car on my own, but can’t carry it very far - we have a trolly for that.

Good luck with your decision - quite a nice choice to have...
