What do you wear?

Thu Oct 05, 2017 4:56 pm

Right guys ; i realise im in for some critisism here but what do you all wear in your boats to keep dry and warm.
I have been wearing neoprene chest waders always with an auto inflate 150 newton lifejacket and have had differing views ; some saying im putting myself in danger because if i go overboard they will fill with water others saying they will help me float which is my idea. All i know is they make launching and retrieving so much easyer and keep me dry and warm. Thoughts please

They will fill and could cause you to drown but i wear them and so do alot of others. I normaly wear walking trouser and a decent waterproof also wear a floatation suit when it gets very cold and or choppy

Its just a dunlop floatation suit we all went to group buy town on for, on here (the forum)... its really not a looker or tge best in the world but it was £80 from 200 or around that....and u willllll be prosecuted for crimes against fasion/burning retinas but its a full on survival jobbie and warm as a mug of hot coco infront of a log fire......well not thaaaaaaat warm but its good.

Personally i struggle with the "waders will drown you" argument?
lets face it if you go overboard one of two things is going to happen.

1, they will fill with water.
This won't drown you. Whether the water is inside or outside it is neutrally buoyant.
As long as you are wearing some sort of buoyancy aid around the upper body then you'll float.

2, they will be pressed to your body.
again not an issue if you are wearing a lifejacket.

The down side of waders in this situation is getting them off.
The boots will make swimming difficult, in the same way any footwear will.
If they are full of water they will be easier to remove, and this will probably be necessary to get back on the boat due to the extra weight.
If they are not full of water and pressed to the body then they will more difficult to remove.
In this situation you need to roll them off down your body.

If you are going to get into trouble it will more likely be due to panic or cold water shock!

I'm a shorts and t shirt or dry suit type of guy.
If it's remotely warm I'm in my flip flops and shorts and t-shirt.
I'll happily wade in with my shorts to launch / retrieve.
If it's that bit chillier I'm in my dry suit.
Never been cold enough yet to wear the thermal under garments.
At recent WWA I was in my shorts on the way out then donned the dry suit for the return leg - and by God I was pleased to have it.
I had a flotation suit but flogged it after I bought the dry suit.

I agree with Andy B's comments but would add that if you use or wear a belt around the waistline of your waders this will restrict the amount of water entering the waders in the first place and by bringing your knees up towards your chest when in the water would give you added buoyancy

Personally I've no problem wearing waders and belt along with a Musto Coastal BR1 jacket ........ the conditions on this years WWA were pretty lumpy with driving wind and rain and I was bone dry :D
If it's very wet and cold I've a Typhoon 'hinge' dry suit but they ain't cheap :|

Dry suit bottoms , with a pair of wet suit boots, and if it’s cold or raining I wear my Musto br1 jacket

My understanding is you won't sink but its obviously going to be harder to swim and get back on the boat.
