On the same note as the Gurnards post -
This is spurn, A lighthouse boat that now resides in Hull Marina.
All I know is it was retired in the 70’s, I think it was anchored around the sandbanks of Goole.

Spurn point (sand bank) lighthouse/boat

I used to pass this everyday of the week, it’s still there now on the roadside if the marina. Last seen a few weeks ago as I visited “The Deep”

The Gurnard wrote:This one is a bit different from the norm as it wasn’t built by a Stevenson ..it was built by A & J Ingles of Glasgow. Nor is it built on land ... as it is built on a ship and was anchored off North Carr reef offshore at Fife .. until 1975.

lighthouse.jpg

It has a rather tragic history in that during a terrible storm in December 1959 ..the ship broke adrift from its anchor. The crew of six sent a mayday as the ship was built with no engine because it was permanently anchored on the reef.

Conditions were that bad .. only the lifeboat “Mona” could be launched from the shelter of Broughty Ferry..its home base. Its last radio contact was at 4.48 in the cold dark winter morning..when she said she was struggling to make the North Carr. Sadly..the lifeboat was later discovered capsized and her crew of eight drowned.

The six crew on the lightship managed to re-anchor the ship and were airlifted to safety the following morning

I took this photo a few years back.. while she was berthed in Dundee Harbour.. waiting refurbishment. She may still be there to this day ?

Its not the best photo I have ever taken..but I thought it worth adding to the collection of lighthouses.. and telling its story .. as a remembrance to those who gave their lives to try and save others.

Next time you pass an RNLI collection box.. put some change in it .. one day .. it could be you that needs help. :thumbsup

Donnie, it's still there in the same place and in a shit state, doesn't look like it's had any chipping and painting done since it was moored there. Surrounded now by a newApex hotel, and an even newer fox cable wake boarding set up......not to mention a Dominoes, a Chinese buffet and an Indian !! :thud

It was moored for many years in the outer part of Anstruther Harbour, at which time it was kept in good condition with its bright red paintwork. It seemed massive when sitting next to it in the car park eating our Anster fish suppers.
:cheers
cheers

Wrote a note said, 'back in a minute'. Bought a boat and I sailed off in it.
