Eastbourne International Airshow - 17 - 20 August 2017

Postby James » Mon Jul 10, 2017 11:36 pm

Hi

Does anyone fancy going to watch this?

We can leave from Newhaven (or somewhere else), go out, drop the anchor and watch the planes.

http://www.eastbourneairshow.com/

I've always fancied watching it from the sea

I'm not sure if Newhaven will be the best place to launch due as I think the will be busy and parking maybe an issue. I know a lot of boats gather up to watch the display.

Maybe someone has another launch location in mind?

Unless you fancy carrying your entire setup down the shingle banks, there is not a lot of choice for launching that way!

Does Sovereign Harbour have a ramp?

I don't know mate. I could be wrong, but at the weekend we did 40 odd miles in the boats. So I don't mind if it's a long way from the slip to East Bourne.

I actually had the same idea about watching Airbourne from the water James when I was ordering my FRIB a couple of months ago. Since the Newhaven crash, the planes don't fly over the crowds like they used to. Last year I was out kayak fishing with my old man about 10 miles down the coast and some sort of impressive jet (I think it was a Eurofighter) was doing overruns and hovering right above us. It was like we had our own private show!

Eastbourne harbour does have a slip. I checked it out the other day and it's quite a commercial set-up, right next to the sailing club and with a big boat crane up above it. Boatlaunch.co.uk says it's a hefty £25 to use on a weekend! From the memory of going on a fishing boat charter a few years ago, there's also a harbour lock to negotiate. The whole of Eastbourne usually gets pretty gridlocked over Airbourne, so I imagine the harbour may be the same and getting in and out could take some time.

Exactly what I've found Enzo. I've done a couple of beach launches now off the shingle and it's certainly hard work. I stumbled across this video of how Bexhill fishing club do it. Particularly good from about 2mins30 in when they come back to beach on the shingle, gunning it and jumping the boat out the water up the stoney bank! Not great for inflatables, though :o:

I was down Newhaven I think 2 years ago when the airshow was on.

I managed to get a packing space, and I asked the slip owners why parking was so bad as I didn't know the show was on. He told me it's because people are leaving Newhaven slip to go and watch the airshow from the sea.

So it's probably doable, but it would be an early start to guarantee a parking space.

When I was a kid, my dad use to take me to watch the planes I remember the 747 flying really low across the water.

I just thought it would be really good to drop the anchor, laydown on a soft blow up bed, get the fishing rod out and chill watching the planes :-)

Yeah, I agree. My mum used to take me as a kid too. Sounds like it would be good fun . I'm keen, but won't be able to commit until a little nearer the time as, depending on work, I may be on hols that week.

Good to know Newhaven is doable. Looks like a 20mile trip around Beachy Head to get to the sea off the main promenade fly over.

If it was hovering chances are it was an F-35 :D

20miles, no sweat with our Johnsons :D
25 Litres of fuel will cover the trip and a little play time

You're probably right Andy. I thought it had that T bar shaped bit below the cockpit like the Eurofighters, but my knowledge of planes (as you can probably tell by my description) is not great .
