Sunsport V Lodestar & 9.8Tohatsu V 9.9 Yamaha

Post by PeterM » 09 Aug 2018, 12:18

Some of the pics are in the gallery but was really interesting to compare the 2 set ups - both with air floor & keel, both with similar weights but differing engines.

the sunsport is rigge with a 9.8 2 stroke tohatsu , the lodestar with 9.9 4 stroke Yamaha - so we had to do the obligatory 'race' to see how they performed . Amazingly the 9.9 4 stroke Yamaha was quicker off the mark & go to a higher top speed ( by about 0.5knt! ) than the Sunsport & Tohatsu.

A couple of possible reasons ? the tohatsu is 9.8hp - the Yamaha 9.9 ? - possible but unlikely in the real world .
- the sunsport is wider and potentially more 'draggy' as more of it sits on the water ?
- the tohatsu was creating a lot of splash against the leg - which = drag , which with only 9.8 hp could take energy away from pushing the boat.

The Yamaha seemed to use less fuel - but this was negliable really - only maybe 2 less over 4 hours. Noise and smoothness - not much between the 2 really - yes at idle the 4 stroke was very smooth and once running it made no difference at all !

The Sunsport seemed to give a far more 'planted' and definitely drier ride where as the lodestar was more 'light' on the plane and was more splashy - mainly due t water being forched up the rear handles and then coming into the boat in the wind.

Next time we will swap the engines between boats for more of a comparison :)

Cracking write up Pete, and images to boot...
I don’t know if this is the case on these two outboards for certain, but I suspect the cubic capacity between the 9.8 and 9.9 will be rather different..
Maybe worth checking up in engine cc

cheers 🍺

The Yamaha 9.9hp that Pete has is the newer "high thrust" four stroke which is the same as the 8hp i used to have.
these both have a displacement of 212cc

I recently sold the predecessor of this engine which was much larger and had a displacement of 323cc
But you have to bare in mind that this engine was also the hardware for the 15hp and 20hp engines and came with a charging circuit.

The Tohatsu 9.8hp 2 stroke is a gem, it's probably one of the most desirable sub 10hp outboards at the moment
and when you consider that you're getting all this performance from an engine that is only 169cc it's not hard to see why.

The real difference is weight!
Pete's Yam comes in at 39kg's which ain't bad for what you're getting, but the Tohatsu comes in at only 26kg's

The future is with four strokes, and things are improving rapidly. I think this comparison shows this well.
Just to give you an idea how things are improving the 323cc Yamaha 9.9hp weighs in at 48kg's :

Thanks Andy. I had no idea about the difference in specs. Google hasn't helped much either!

I'm really pleased with it tbh. And yep the 6 ,8, and 9.9 I think the same block in this 2007 model. Surprised by no real oil filter.. but it's like new under the hood and oil is clear and golden ;)

The tohatsu is awesome... but agree the 4 strokes are getting better and better. I'm also a Yamaha fan! ;)

Me too, 8-)
Although i would say that Suzuki are leading the market with the newer 4 strokes, Yamaha arn't far behind and have in my opinion far better build quality.

Where as Suzuki's tend to suffer from corrosion, Yams seem to stay in far better condition over time.
Of course a lot depends on how they are treated...

I found they don't appreciate being hung over the back of the transom like outboards even if they are regularly serviced??
