SEAMANSHIP EXAMS for FIB USERS

SEAMANSHIP EXAMS (NPPL)

As there isn't such a thing as a UK Microlight Seaplane Rating I am in the unique position that as I hold a SEAPLANE RATING for General Aviation Aircraft I can fly FIB's under the privileges of my GA Licences Worldwide. Obviously GA Pilots have to get a Seaplane Rating to fly anything from water but as there isn't a Seaplane Rating applicable to FIB Microlights it has been opined by the UK Aviation Authorities now that ANYONE with a Microlight Licence can fly a FIB within the UK.

In the UK there are a few Flight Training Facilities recognised by the UK CAA for Seaplane Training, specialising in theoretical knowledge courses for the written Seamanship Examinations. This is provided via a ONE DAY ground seminar available for either the Professional Seamanship or Private examinations. The written papers consist of multiple-choice questions :- 20 (Private) or 30 (Professional) covering-:
* Symbols and abbreviations used in Admiralty charts and plans which are of importance to seaplane pilots
* The regulations for preventing collisions at sea
* Lights and shapes to be carried by ships and aeroplanes
* Sound and light signals of distress (ships)
* International Association of Lighthouse Maritime Buoyage - Region A
* Knowledge of tides and tidal definitions in general use

It is recommended that ground training for the Seamanship examinations is undertaken prior to starting any practical seaplane flying. The ground school and examination is also required if you are converting from a foreign rating. Prior study will leave time to make best use of your practical flight training, and ensure this is a more enjoyable and stress free experience.

Although the written exams are fairly straightforward, there is a considerable amount of material to become familiar with - making self-study hit and miss - without guidance. Don't let "Fail to Prepare = Prepare to Fail" apply.

The need to do the SEAMANSHIP EXAMS to operate a FIB are not legally required from the Aviation Law perspective, but highly advisable I would imagine :yay
Is it legally required to have completed the Seamanship Exams to use a RIB on the Water? I am just trying to get a better understanding of what the Law is with regards to operating on water?

The worrying thing is, there is absolutely no legal requirement for taking any leisure vessel onto our seas!

As is purely in evidence at slipways and marinas around our shorelines whenever the sun comes out.

No registration or insurance needed.
