Printable Charts

Post by Redlinebuzz » 08 Dec 2016, 21:26

Anyone any recommendations for printing charts that can be laminated ? I had a look at the Navionics website as that's what I use on my phone and tablet, but theres nothing on the web version for navigation like where not is ( I know it's near the top somewhere)

Had a look at buying the paper admiralty charts but they aren't waterproof and not sure if they'd fit in my a4 laminator, thanks.

Are you sure it's really paper? Over here you can order 'paper' prints from NOAA but they are actually a vinyl print that is waterproof. Not sure why they refer to it that way.
Wrote a note said, 'back in a minute'. Bought a boat and I sailed off in it.

Why not just take a screen grab of the bit of the chart you need and print that...

Imray charts are all now printed on partly synthetic water-resistant paper.

Having said that, my C27 Firth of Forth Imray chart is a bit large and unwieldy to use on the SIB, so I have scanned in the individual localities where I tend to go, then printed and laminated them on A3 or A4 sheets, which are much more practical to carry with me.

Memorymap do all 850 UKHO charts that cover Britain, Ireland and Channel Islands on DVD for a special price of £30, normally £50, which is a great buy with unlimited printing. They are raster maps rather than vector like Navionics so different scales are on separate charts and they appear identical to UKHO paper charts. I find laminated A4 charts/maps ideal for use in a small RIB or kayak. I print back to back and loop several laminates together with a bit of thin shock cord threaded through punch holes at one end.

If you draw a spiders web on a printed chart, and set a waypoint on a basic handheld GPS to the centre of the web, the GPS range and bearing enables you to instantly pinpoint your location on a printed chart. I have used this technique and it works really well, and is ideally suited to sibs.
