Where to fish in the Solent?

Post by ChrisParish » 06 Jul 2018, 19:37

Hey folks!

I’m hoping to do some fishing with my Dad over the next couple of days. My T38 didn’t arrive on time so I will be using my Zodiac 310 which doesn’t handle chop well at all and doesn’t like planing on account of being a soggy matteress.

So, if I was to put in on the Hamble where should I go for some fish? I have a feather hand line and trolling rig along with an ugly stik, reel, line and various spoons. Don’t mind going a few miles but it will probably be at displacement speeds so no massive journeys.

Come out of the Hamble and turn left.
Find yourself a nice spot about a mile of shore.
If you have a sounder then look for where the water gets deeper as it quite flat bottomed a long way out.
If you're happy to cross Southampton water head west past Calshot and about half way between Calshot and Lepe Beach.
Again about a mile off shore, watch out for the lobster pots!

Be warned though, there's lots of weed in the Solent ATM...

I don’t have a sounder yet, so I will have to rely on the sonar chart on Navionics.
Thanks for the suggestions - I’ll let you know how I get one!

Hope you put him back? maybe in a couple of years when the ban has been lifted and he's had time to fatten up you can go back and catch him again ;-)

Well done on the bass.

Me being a cynic thinks it will end up in a commercials catch before then.

I know. It’s rotten that we can’t take any but the commercial guys can. Can’t help but feel it should be the other way around.

I've been launching in to the Solent East of you off Hayling Island over the last few months. I've had my best fishing on the Dean Tale wreck just inside the shipping channel. There's also some good rough ground visible via the Navionics app a little North of Dean Tale, although it's mostly produced dogfish (and lots of them!).

The only issue with the above area is it's about 5 miles out, which is hard work when more often than not you're heading in to chop. The journey is worth it though when, sitting in a small inflatable, you're joined by a big fishing charter boat!

I haven't found many other decent spots closer to the coast yet, bar the odd bass a mile or two outside the enterance of Chichester Harbour and, last weekend, this small pollack (I think) 2 miles off Bracklesham Bay. Interested to hear if anyone else has found a hot spot.

Cheers,

Phil

I found a bass between Lymington and Yarmouth, and some mackerel about a mile off calshot beach.
