8th July - South Coast

Post by James » 04 Jul 2018, 22:37

Hi

I've told the wife, D.I.Y is on hold on the 8th as I want to get out on the boat
Is anyone going out in the south coast? I was thinking if not, I may go out to Newhaven for a blast - Anyone is welcome to join me.

Obviously, depends on weather, and just remembered - tide. I need to check that.

I’m planning on hitting the IOW on the 8th. The tides are a bit crap, low over the middle of the day.

I'm going out fishing from Littlehampton that day. High tide around 10am.
I'm not really a Hobbit, just look like one. Real name is "Andy".

What makes you think that Chris?

High water at 08:30 and then again at 18:00, sounds perfect to me. Water when you need it to launch and recover.
Nothing worse than rushing back to the slip hoping to get there before the water buggers off!

I've pointed out to Paul recently how fast you can lose the water at Hythe.
last Saturday we got back to the slip @ around 16:30 and by 17:30 the water was gone!

On the 8th you've got high water from 18:03 all the way through to 20:48 with low water not until 00:26 the following day, absolutely no need to rush back. :thumbsup

Fair point. I stand corrected.

It does depend a bit what you are planning on doing. I was hoping to cross to Cowes and go up the river to Newport.

Not corrected at all mate.
And by what you want to do i see why you think it so hence the phasing as a question.

My bad. I’m not very good at inferring tone in message boards (even though you phrased it as a question)

It honestly had not occurred to me that having a low tide over the middle of the day can be benifical as it gives you the water for launching and recovery. Showing my lack of experience here. 😳

The other thing worth looking at is tidal current direction. In a sib you really want the wind and tide going in the same direction or at 90 degrees. If the tide is going the opposite way to the wind then you will get much bigger waves and a rougher ride (it's termed "wind over tide" or "wind against tide").

In The Solent the tide runs east to west from Portsmouth HW -1 hrs, and then west to east from Portsmouth HW +5 hrs

Andy, Gutted cant join you yet, but get boat back Monday/Tuesday depend on skipping off to collect.
Let me know what launching from Littlehampton is like, really interested if its a better site than goring Beach.
