I wouldn't be so sure Andy, she may have been handing out a ticket, but she handed me and Paul a £9 charge each!
She is rather cute though, so I forgave her quite easily

I saw the ticket lady, quickly said bye and headed off :-)
That wasn't the "Ticket Lady" that was the HM handing out a notification of prosecution for speeding within the harbour to a couple of jetski's :o
Oh. I thought it was someone saying have you paid to launch.

While I was struggling to put the launch wheels down, I did hear someone shout slow down  I looked up but didn't see anything, so I thought maybe I miss heard.

He asked if it's possible to go to the IoW on a Saturday, sleep over and then come back Sunday. I'm not sure what's involved with a trip like that.[/quote]

James, it should be doable, but in company would obviously be better.
A couple of choices for camping, Island Harbour up the Medina from Cowes is good and lets you camp. It would be a good hop over from Warsash, and easily doable in calm enough conditions, which I would do on my own. Just need to avoid Bramble bank at low tide, (they play cricket on it once a year or so on a very low tide).
Would be a bit more of a slog from Chichester, but no worse than our total trip yesterday. The Folly In is a great place for dinner as well, not too far from Island Harbour.
Another option is wild camping, and I know a great place, PM me if you want more info.

What's the South of the IoW like? So if we left Chichester and went to the bottom of IoW, is that classed as a stupid thing to think about?
I would say going through Hurst on way to Needles is often worse than Needles itself, but depends on the day.
South of island going round St Catherines can be BIG seas, even worse than I experienced at Needles and Hurst. I would not try St Catherines without support of a larger boat, unless you were sure conditions were calm. First time I went, was in a Searider 5.4, and I literally lost sight of everyone between waves of about 5-6m peak to trough

Also, as Andy says, not much on south side of island except for Ventnor to interest you, great place for lunch but not sure if there's anywhere to camp.

Nope, so he probably got a ticket, or was buying a season ticket or something. I just got handed a £4 harbour fee ticket and a £5 slipway fee ticket.

Thanks for the detailed reply. I don't mind a slog ride :-) More time in the boat.
I'll save that information in case I get around to organising something.

Chi is probably not the best place to start an island adventure, there are much better places to start.
I've been in conversation with Paul about a trip out of keyhaven.
It's the shortest crossing to the island, but the harbour is tidal. It would be great for the Needles and a trip around to Freshwater.
With places to beach and stop for refreshments like The Hut in Colwell bay or The waterfront in Totland bay.
I would need to check the tides before finalizing a trip though
Personally i don't see any point in going further round in a sib. The haul from Freshwater to Ventnor wouldn't be much fun in a Sib.
Plus as Neil has mentioned the overfalls at st cats are no fun in a small boat!

That looks like and interesting route.
I'd love to do a full lap of the island just to say I've done it, but it sounds like it's too hard or risky.

It's been discussed before, but at 60 miles around from Cowes to Cowes not allowing for the trip out from your chosen launch point it's a long way.
last time i did it i think we logged 78 miles.
That with the challenges like Bembridge ledge and St Catherines point It would be wise to be accompanied by a support boat.
Not saying it's not doable, just would need the right day and the right gear.
