New outboard for 1987 Zodiac C310

Post by ChrisParish » 23 May 2018, 15:35

Hi there folks,

I have an old Zodiac c310 from 1987 - wooden floor and inflatable keel. It is currently being pushed along by a 1990’s mariner 5hp. While this was fine back when I was 10 I am now 37 and it is totally gutless.
The max rating on the transom is 10hp.

My questions are:

1) it is worth putting a 10hp engine on? Will the performance be significantly better given the old hull design?

2) Will a modern 4 stroke engine be too heavy? I have heard that some of them aren’t much heavier than the old 2 strokes.

3) I’m in the Solent area, does anyone have one I could a) try and possibly b) buy?

Cheers,

Chris

Hi Chris
If I recall (unfortunately my grey cells ain't what they used to be) the Avon Rover is almost the same boat of yours :|
Here's a image of a Rover, got any photos of yours :?:
159 (2).jpg
Blootac has a Rover powered with a 10hp 4 stroke and it goes very well :drive
Sibs of that era were more 'heavy duty' built than today's offerings and as long as your's isn't showing any signs of adhesion between transom to fabric failure it should cope :| but please check yours first :!:
The only down side is that the older sibs used smaller diameter tubes with less of an angle formed at the bow so it'll be a 'splashy' wet ride in less than calm waters  .... if you don't mind getting wet it'll be fun for sure :drive
The very latest EFI outboards of 10, 15 and 20hp seem to be sharing the same power heads so weigh the same :thud
I'd do some research and buy an OB pre 2017 as the power heads were different and thus lighter ..... Mariner, Tohatsu or Suzuki 10hp carb models for example
:cheers

New outboard for 1987 Zodiac C310

Thanks for the reply

With the exception of the keel (which comes unstuck every now and again) the boat is in exceptional condition as it hasn’t been used much for the last 20 years and has been stored well.

I will keep my eye out for a pre 2017 10hp then.
I just hope that it will be worth it. My Dad reckons that my limiting factor is the boat and that changing the engine won’t make much difference.

Thoughts?

I have attached a picture of it without the floor in from when I was re-gluing the keel

Chris
I'm sure there's some video footage of Blootac's Rover in action so you can judge for yourself if it's worth the powering up and outlay :|
I'll come back ;-)
:cheers

Hi Chris,
You say you're Solent based, where abouts?
If you are interested I have a Mariner 9.9hp 4 stroke that il happily let you try.
It'll push my Zodiac 380 at 15 knots all day long and with my modifications it's a heavy boat.
It's just seen service in Scotland and is a great engine as anyone on here will verify.
If you're interested I'd be open to offers.

I’m in Southampton and I have been running my boat on the Hamble.
I would very much like to try the 9.9.

Attached is a pic from this morning’s run up the river.

Apart from some very minor marks on the hook it's in fantastic condition.
Pumps water like a fire truck, and only 38kg's. I'm sure it would be a good match for a 3.1m SIB.
I'm a bit busy for the next couple of weekends, but if you're seriously interested in trying it out I'm sure we can work something out.
I would include a fuel tank and lines in the sale if you were interested.

Hi Andy,

Thanks for the offer of letting me try the larger engine.
With regards to purchasing said engine, I have been reminded that I have a holiday to pay for before I am allowed to buy engines, so any purchase will probably be closer to the end of the season :(

If you are still willing to let me try it I would be very greatful but I understand if you are reluctant.

I am in no rush, so any time which works for you. I work shifts so I am around at strange times.
