It's not hard to see why 2 stroke engines are still very popular, especially at the lower end of the hp range.
I just took in a 4hp 4 stroke Suzuki (which are known for being good on weight for a 4stroke)
look at the comparison between it and my old trusty Mariner 3.3hp...

That's a lot of weight for 0.7hp.

Does make you wonder where all the extra weight comes from :scratch
Both are single cylinder but the 4 stroke Suzi weighs in at 25kg whereas the Mariner 13kg :o
How does the weight almost double :Confused

I love my old smoker and I’ll never give it up, but the fuel economy/response and quietness of a four strike wins hands down for me.
I do agree through, that’s some weight increase for a few farts more :lol:

The Suzuki is listed at 29kg's wet, but i assume that includes a full tank of fuel.
It does have the facility to run with a remote tank though, which the Mariner does not.

I suppose a better comparison would have been against the Merc 4hp 2 stroke @ 20kg's, but i sold that last week ;-)

Apart from weight difference, the performance advantage of 2 strokes over 4 strokes has just about disappeared with the arrival of efi in the smaller outboards. My new Tohatsu 20 efi has instant throttle response compared to the slight delay of my Mariner (now sold) which used to bog down slightly if the throttle was snapped open. Add to that the superb fuel consumption - I'll live with the extra lbs from the heavier cylinder head, valve gear etc. (not forgetting the 1kg of oil in the sump)
Why am I here - I should be in my boat fishing!!

I'm really not a fan of 4 strokes up to 20hp purely because of the extra weight and fussy storage.

I have an ex rnli 5hp mariner 2 stroke (with integral and remote fuel tank) which lives in the engine room on the boat. It's only 20kg's so lugging it up, out and over the side of Desperate down to the sib is a reet ball ache. weight is a major priority. the extra 5kg the 4 stroke weighs (another 25% is huge) would be a proper pain in the back(side).

Also, storage, the 2 stroke can be stored any old way so again, a winner :thumbsup :thumbsup

Then performance, for any given HP a stroker just has more get up and go (imho) so in my 240 airdeck it just flies... :drive. I've tried a 5hp 4 stroke mercury on the same sib. sluggish is the only way i can describe the performance...

Then, last but not least the smell... i know its subjective but i love the smell of 2 stroke, its very evocative for me. child hood in the dinghy with a 4hp yami stroker and my 1st motorbike the illustrious yamaha RD125LC.... :lol: :lol:

gimme a smoker any day!!! :lol: :lol: :lol:

i know the green credentials are "lacking" but hey in the scheme of things swapping my 2s to a 4s aint gonna make a sods worth of difference.
If it has t*ts, tyres or floats......it's gonna cost ya!

Many of the newer 4strokes are 3 sides storage now Si, a plate in the sump keeps the oil where it should be.. in the sump :lol:
Efi has dropped the weight in the portables but small portables tend to have carbs still

I think both outboards have their use. Is there an argument over which?
I’m not sure myself.

I was in the local evinrude dealer the other day & they had a brand new 15hp 4stroke Tohatsu EFI - the thing was HUGE compared the 15 2 stroke I was in there to get a bits for. Yes I'm sure it was super smooth and silent & economical , but if you are having to mount & in mount OB in this HP range the old 2 strokes are just so much easier.

Of course if anything goes wrong with the new 4 strokes its going to cost more to fix .. and if I dunk my 2 stroke I'll have it running again in 15 mins without issue or parts - the 4 strokes will need new filters oil and faffing ... unless they have had the RNLI immersion work !

At the really small end ( 2.5/ 3.5) the 4 strokes are good - you just use them to potter so power isn't the key - up from this I think its 2 stroke still winning for me - until about 25- 30 hp the new generation 4 start to take over again ?

For me, it is the noise that puts me off a 2 stroke, plus the pollution factor. My 20hp efi weighs 43kg, how does that compare to a 20hp 2 stroke for weight?

Same here.
My two stroke sounded like I was pulling a box of spanners . The four stroke just purrs along.
